Leprosy Important facts and figures
Leprosy status worldwide:
At the end of the reporting year, globally 180,464 leprosy patients were on record for treatment. The prevalence rate was estimated as 0.32 per 10,000 population. When compared to the previous year (189,018 cases) a reduction in prevalence of 8,554 cases was recorded. During the reporting year, 215,557 new cases were reported from 103 countries.
When compared to the number of new cases reported in the previous year (232,857) a decrease in new case detection of 17,201 was noted. The new case detection rate globally was 3.81 per 100,000 population.
A total of 206,107 cases were reported in the14 main endemic countries( these included 6 countries in AFR, 6 countries in SEAR, and 1 country each from AMR and WPR - reported >1000 new cases in 2013) comprising 96% of the global new case detection. A few countries – Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia and Madagascar – reported more new cases in 2013 than in the previous year, though in very small numbers. India reported the highest number of new cases (126,913) followed by Brazil (31,044) and Indonesia (16,856). Leprosy status in India:
In India, The year 2013-14 started with 0.92 lakh leprosy cases on record as on 1st April 2013, with PR 0.73/10,000. A total of 0.86 lakh cases are on record as on 1st April 2014, giving a Prevalence rate (PR) of 0.68 per 10,000 population.
Importantly, a total of 1.27 lakh new cases were detected during the year 2013-14, which gives Annual New Case Detection Rate (ANCDR) of 9.98 per 100,000 population. MB (51.48%), Female (36.91%), Child (9.49%), Grade II Deformity (4.14%), ST cases (17.88%) and SC cases (18.03%).
A total of 5256 Gr. II disability detected amongst the New Leprosy Cases during 2013-14, indicating the Gr. II Disability Rate of 4.13 / million population.
A total of 12,043 child cases were recorded, indicating the Child Case rate of 0.95/100,000 population

Leprosy status in Maharashtra:
There were 12,659 leprosy cases on record as on March 2013 with PR : 0.92 16,400 new cases were detected during 2013-2014 which gives Annual New Case Detection Rate (ANCDR) of 13.96 per 100,000 population. PB- 6979 (43%), MB- 9421 (57%) Child cases – 2083 (12.7%), Disabled cases – 1549 (9%).
